Providing good information about the condition and how to manage it is the crucial first step in the process. Professionals working with children with ASD must have a planned way of informing parents and carers, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>providing written information, and<\/li>\n<li>giving opportunities and time to discuss their questions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Where possible attempt should be made to connect parents with other people who have experience of managing children with autism, including other parents. Many parents would also need social and financial support to meet the needs of the child.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adjusting social physical environment to suit the child\u2019s needs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Consider the physical environment to suit the child\u2019s needs e.g.:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using visual supports, such as pictures or symbols that are meaningful for the child<\/li>\n<li>Addressing any sensory sensitivities such as towards noise or light<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Specific interventions for the core features of autism<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><em>Psychosocial interventions suitable for the child\u2019s developmental level<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Supporting and increasing parents\u2019 and teachers\u2019 understanding of, and sensitivity and responsiveness to, the child\u2019s pattern of communication and social interaction<\/li>\n<li>Using techniques and aids e.g. pictures and symbols to support and enhance the child\u2019s communication, social interaction and play patterns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Interventions for difficult behaviours<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Consider factors that may trigger or worsen difficult behaviours e.g.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 coexisting conditions,<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 communication difficulties,<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 physical environment e.g. noise<\/p>\n<p>o \u00a0\u00a0poor social circumstances e.g. abuse<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 poor structure for the child\u2019s activities<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 poor response to behaviour by parents and carers<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>and consider<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 the impact of the behaviour e.g. the risk to the child an impact on the family<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 the resources and lifestyle of parents<\/p>\n<p><strong>Provide intervention to include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 a clearly identified and agreed targeted behaviour<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 a focus on improving the Quality of Life of the child and the family<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 parent education and training<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 a review to monitor progress<\/p>\n<p>Consider medication prescribing by a paediatrician or a psychiatrist if the psychosocial interventions are unsuccessful and there is a significant impact of the behaviour.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Interventions for improving life skills<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>These are provided to the child or the young person with ASD to help them cope with day to day challenges of life e.g. travelling, shopping etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interventions for coexisting problems<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Consider seeking advice and help from other professionals for any coexisting conditions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interventions for managing anxiety<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Consider individual or group cognitive behaviour therapy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>What not to do:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The following interventions have poor or no evidence basis and should not be suggested or provided:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 neurofeedback<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 auditory integration therapy<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0secretin<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 chelation<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 hyperbaric oxygen therapy<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (snake oil). <strong>Unknown medicines or treatments can harm your child<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Also See: <a href=\"http:\/\/enablenet.info\/wordpress\/index.php\/autism\/autism-management-and-support\/sleep-problems-in-autism-spectrum-disorders\/\">Sleep Problems<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Further reading:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.
